What Is Shame?
Shame is a feeling of embarrassment or humiliation that arises from the perception of having done something dishonorable, immoral, or improper. People who experience shame usually try to hide the thing they feel ashamed of. When shame is chronic, it can involve the feeling that you are inferior, insignificant or unimportant.
Christine Caine : How to Terminate Shame
First, it is important to understand that shame is not from God. Shame is a result of sin and the brokenness of this world. God never intended for you to feel ashamed or inferior. In fact, He created you in His image and has a specific plan and purpose for each of our lives. Life of Shalom!
To overcome being ashamed, you must first recognize that you are not defined by your past mistakes or failures. You are not your sins! Your thoughts and actions must overcome satan’s lies. In Jesus Christ, you have been made new and forgiven. Romans 8:1 says, “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” You must embrace this truth and believe that you are loved and accepted by God, regardless of your past.
Next, you must renew your minds with the truth of God’s word. It is easy to fall into the trap of negative self-talk and believe the lie that you are worthless or insignificant. However, the Bible tells you that you are valuable and important to God. Psalm 139:14 says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” You must remind yourself of these truths daily and reject any thoughts or beliefs that are not aligned with God’s word.
Finally, you must surround yourself with a supportive community that encourages and uplifts you. Shame thrives in isolation, but when you allow others to speak truth into your life, it loses its power. You must seek out people who will challenge you to be the best version of yourself and remind you of God’s love and grace.
