What Is Shame?

Shame is a feeling of embarrassment or humiliation that arises from the perception of having done something dishonorable, immoral, or improper. People who experience shame usually try to hide the thing they feel ashamed of. When shame is chronic, it can involve the feeling that you are inferior, insignificant or unimportant.

Christine Caine : How to Terminate Shame

First, it is important to understand that shame is not from God. Shame is a result of sin and the brokenness of this world. God never intended for us to feel ashamed or inferior. In fact, He created us in His image and has a specific plan and purpose for each of our lives. Life of Shalom!

To overcome being ashamed, we must first recognize that we are not defined by our past mistakes or failures. We are not our sins. In Jesus Christ, we have been made new and forgiven. Romans 8:1 says, “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” We must embrace this truth and believe that we are loved and accepted by God, regardless of our past.

Next, we must renew our minds with the truth of God’s word. It is easy to fall into the trap of negative self-talk and believe the lie that we are worthless or insignificant. However, the Bible tells us that we are valuable and important to God. Psalm 139:14 says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” We must remind ourselves of these truths daily and reject any thoughts or beliefs that are not aligned with God’s word.

Finally, we must surround ourselves with a supportive community that encourages and uplifts us. Shame thrives in isolation, but when we allow others to speak truth into our lives, it loses its power. We must seek out people who will challenge us to be the best version of ourselves and remind us of God’s love and grace.
